Russell was born 7 miles south of Fontanelle on his great grandma Herrick’s farm and he would spend the rest of his life in and around Adair County. His schooling was at Washington #7 a country school not far from his childhood home. His young adult life he worked away from home with farmers in Adair County. He was a jack of all trades, he worked building fence, chipping wood, sheering sheep and working for a high line company. He was married to Jean (Blazek) in 1957 and was blessed with five children: Sarah (Orchard), Lois (Myers), Jerry (Davis), Norman (Davis) and Eric (Davis). They purchased a farm in Adams County and there he would farm for the rest of their married life. He later married Pat Odom and lived in Mississippi for several years before returning to Iowa.
Russell loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He was a member of the Coyote Hunting group that existed back in the ‘60’s. His greatest times were sitting on the bank of a river seeing how big of a fish he could catch.
